Kathrikai katta / Brinjal gravy


Kathrikai katta is a side dish which perfectly goes well with biryani,ghee rice and pulao. It surely has a place in biryani meal at my home.Its a spicy tangy dish.Tomatoes and tamarind extract gives tanginess to this dish..This is a thick gravy.The thickness comes from the onion tomato paste. This is my mom’s sis recipe.I served it with Mutton Biryani and everyone loved it.

Serves : 3 persons

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED


Brinjal – 250 gm

Tomato – 2 (finely chopped)
Onion – 2(sliced)
Peppercorns – 1 tsp
Tamarind – small gooseberry size
Curry leaves – a sprig
Coriander leaves – a few
Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp
Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
Coriander powder – 2 tsp
Fenugreek seeds – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Oil – 2 tbsp
Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
Fennel seeds – 1/4 tsp

METHOD

1.Clean the brinjal , make 4 slits in it and put it in water or it may get black.Soak tamarind in 1 cup of water .Dry roast fenugreek seeds,Peppercorns for few seconds and keep them aside.

2.To a pan,Add Oil.Once it gets hot,add cumin seeds and fennel seeds.Add Onions.

3.Cook onion till they get light golden.Add chopped tomatoes.Cook the tomatoes till they get little mushy.

4.Take half of this cooked onion tomatoes mixture and add it to the blender along with the roasted fenugreek seeds,peppercorns and make a fine smooth paste.

5.Cook the remaining onion and tomatoes.Add about 10 peppercorns to it.This is optional.Add curry leaves and coriander leaves.

6.Add required amount of salt and ginger garlic paste.Cook till raw smell goes.Add the blended onion tomato paste.Rinse the blender jar with water and add the water.

7.Add chilli powder,coriander powder and mix well.Add brinjal. Add the soaked tamarind water.Mix them well.Close with a lid and cook till the brinjal gets cooked completely and the gravy is thick.Open and stir occasionally until its done.Serve it with biryani.
