Manga potta Meen Kuzhambu / Fish curry with Raw mango

 
Eating fish regularly can be beneficial for your health.Fish is a really nutritious food, being rich in protein, vitamins and minerals which are essential to maintain good health.We used to cook fish twice a week.Manga potta Meen kuzhambu/Fish Curry with raw mango is the default dish I make whenever I buy Fish.This is my grand mothers recipe.She used to cook in earthern pot similarly I too use earthen pot for cooking meen kuzhambu.I used cod fish.You can use any fish you like.I started feeding fish to my child from 6 months onwards.She loves fish.If you are feeding your kids/babies usually prefer boneless fishes.

Cooking time : 20 mins 
Serves : 2-4 persons

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

 



 

Fish – 9 pieces
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Red chilli powder – 1 and 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder – 2 tsp
Cumin powder -1/2 tsp
Pepper powder- 1/2 tsp
Small onions – 25 nos
Garlic – 6 pods
Tamarind – small lemon size
Raw mango -7 small pieces
Ripe tomato – 1(finely chopped)
Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
Curry leaves – a sprig
Green chilli – 3
Coriander leaves – a few
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Fenugreek seeds – 1/4 tsp
Coconut oil – 3 tbsp
Salt to taste
 

METHOD

1.To a pan add 1 tbsp of coconut oil and saute about 15 small onions for about 1 min.Now add grated coconut to it.Roast it for few seconds.

 





2.Take a bowl and add turmeric powder,red chilli powder,coriander powder,cumin powder,pepper powder to it. mix well and add them to the pan.

 




3.Put off the flame and mix the powder with onion coconut mixture.Allow this mixture to cool down.Add it to a blender jar.Make it into a fine smooth paste by adding water.

 




4.Take about 2 tbsp of coconut oil.Coconut oil gives a nice taste to fish curry/meen kuzhambu.To the hot oil add mustard seeds.Wait for the mustard seeds to crackle.Then add fenugreek seeds.


5.Add garlic ,curry leaves and green chilli .Saute them till they get cooked.






6.Then finely slice the remaining small onions and add them.cook them until they get translucent.Add chopped tomatoes.saute it till the tomatoes turns mashy and oil oozes out.






7.Add the mango slices.Mix them well.Add about 1 tsp of salt and the fine smooth coconut paste and mix them well .






8.Soak tamarind in 1 cup of water.Add this tamarind extract and one cup of water to the pot.Cook the curry for about 2 mins.I like my fish curry thick.


9.Add the fish pieces.Don’t stir after adding fish pieces it will break the fish.Just swirl the pot.Close the lid and cook for about 5 mins in low flame.Finally add curry leaves ,coriander leaves and serve fish curry with rice.
