As said earlier Yesterday I made Nethili Meen Thokku / Anchovies Gravy.It has a thick gravy of small onion and tomato.I love the tanginess of the recipe.Tomato and tamarind pulp gives the tanginess to the recipe.I like to have this dish with curd rice,rice and rasam/sambar. You can also simply put this thokku in rice and eat.It also tastes yummy.My family loves this dish.
Anchovies/Nethili meen – 30-35 pieces(I removed the bones)
Small onions – 1 cup
Ripe tomato – 1
Salt to taste
Garlic – 6 pods( sliced)
Curry leaves – 2 sprig
Green chilli – 3
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Red chilli powder – 2 tsp
Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp
Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp
Pepper powder – 1/2 tsp
Oil – 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Fenugreek seeds – 1/4 tsp
1.To a blender jar add small onions, diced tomato pieces.Make fine paste of them.
2.To a pot add oil .When the oil gets hot add mustard seeds.Wait for them to crackle add fenugreek seeds..Then add sliced garlic and saute them.
3.Add curry leaves , green chilli and the small onion tomato paste.
4.Cook them till the oil separates from it.To a bowl put all the above given powders and mix them.Soak tamarind in 1 cup of water.
5.When the oil begins to separate and it starts bubbling add the masala powders.Mix them well.Add the salt to your taste.
6.Then add the tamarind water.Mix them well and check for salt and tanginess. Add salt and tamarind water accordingly.Add the cleaned fish to it. Don’t stir after adding fish.Close the pot with lid and cook in low flame till the water gets reduced. Nethili meen Thokku /Anchovies Gravy is ready.
