Rava Upma

 
Rava Upma is a traditional South Indian breakfast dish.It is usually served with coconut chutney.You can also have it alone or with some sugar.It is nutritious ,tasty and very easy to make at home.There are many other versions of rava upma.This is the simplest and most basic rava upma recipe.

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED


Rava / Semolina – 1 cup

Water – 2 cups
Ghee – 2 tbsp
Onion – 1/2 (sliced)
Green chilli – 2 (chopped into small pieces)
Ginger – 1 tbsp(finely chopped)
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Chana dal – 1 tbsp
Tomato – 1/2 (cut into small pieces)
Cashews – 7 to 9
Grated coconut – 4 tbsp
Curry leaves – a sprig
Curry leaves – a few


METHOD

1.Dry roast rava in low flame until it turns its color lightly for 5 – 6 minutes stirring continuously.Take the roasted rava in a bowl.If you have roasted rava you can skip this step.
2.To a pan add ghee and fry cashews when they turn golden take it and keep it aside.
3.To the same pan add mustard seeds.When they crackle add chana dal saute it.Then add urad dal.
4.Then add sliced onions to it.Saute them.Add chopped ginger and green chilli. 
5.Add curry leaves,coriander leaves and chopped tomatoes.Saute them well.Add salt to your taste.
6.Add  2 cups of water.Check for salt it should be bit salty so that when you add rava it will be perfect.Bring water to boil.When the water starts boiling, add the roasted rava and continuously stir it to avoid lumps.So you should do both the tasks at a time (adding rava and mixing with the boiling water).
7.Add grated coconut and fried cashews and serve it.My hubby likes to have it with sugar but I love it with Pottu kadalai coconut chutney.
