Vazhakkai ( Raw Banana) thoran / Poriyal


Raw bananas helps in weight loss,blood sugar control,lower cholesterol levels,maintaining hemoglobin,good digestion.Raw banana is a good source of fiber,vitamins and minerals. Vazhakkai(Raw banana) thoran/Poriyal is a coconut based dish.Raw banana is sauteed with coconut paste and it is a dry dish.It is served as a side dish.It can be had with Rice and kuzhambu. Yesterday I made some Vazhakkai Thoran along with Suraikkai Puli Kuzhambu.

Serves : 3 persons
 

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

Raw bananas /Vazhakkai –  4 (peeled and diced into cubes)
Grated Coconut – 1/2 cup
Green Chilli – 3
Dried Red Chilli – 2
Small onion – 4
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Garlic – 2 pods
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt to taste
Coconut Oil – 1 tbsp
Onion – 1/2 (finely sliced)
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves – a sprig
Dried round chilli – 5
Asafoetida – a pinch
 

METHOD

1.Grind Coconut,green chilli,dried red chilli,onion ,garlic and cumin seeds into a coarse paste without adding water.
2.Add diced raw bananas to a pan.Add turmeric powder,little salt and 1/2 cup of water.Cook the raw bananas to soft but not mushy and drain the excess water and keep them aside.
3.To a pan add oil,When it is hot add mustard seeds .allow them to crackle.Then add Urad dal. Saute them to light gold.
4.Add sliced onion,curry leaves,dried round chilli and asafoetida. Saute them well.
5.Add cooked Raw bananas.Mix them well.add salt to your taste we have already added salt to banana so check and then add it.add the coarse coconut paste to it.Stir well for about 2 min and put off  the flame Raw banana (Vazhakkai) Thoran is ready.Serve it with Rice and Enjoy the meal.
