Chow chow also known as chayote is a good source of nutrients,vitamins and minerals.They help in preventing Kidney stones,anemia.I buy this chow chow often because I like it .I used to make sambar,poriyal,kootu with this.This side dish recipe has chow chow flavoured with Coconut,cumin and green chillies.I have added channa dal with the veg and made this kootu.Here is the recipe for chow chow kootu.It goes well with Rice and Sambar,Puli Kuzhambu,Vathal kuzhambu.

Serves : 3 – 4persons
Chow Chow – 400 g( peeled and chopped into small pieces)
Channa dal – 1/4 cup
Grated Coconut – 1/3 cup
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Onion – 1/2 (finely chopped)
Green Chilli – 3
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Asafoetida – a pinch
Oil – 2 tsp
1.Peel and chop chow chow into small pieces.Soak channa dal in water for about 10 to 15 minutes.In a blender jar add grated coconut,cumin seeds and green chillies and grind them into a fine paste.
2.In a vessel add chow chow, soaked channa dal and 1 cup water.Add salt.Cook till chow chow gets soft and channa dal gets cooked.After that drain the excess water and keep them aside.
3.To a pan add oil.To the hot oil add mustard seeds let them crackle.Then add urad dal,Asafoetida
4.Add Sliced onions,curry leaves.Saute them till the onions get translucent.
5.Add cooked chow chow and channa dal and stir them well in oil. for few minutes.Now add grinded coconut paste and mix well with them .Cook for few more minutes till the raw smell goes.
Serve it with Rice,Chapati,Dosa.
