Katti Paruppu / Thick lentil curry

Katti paruppu is most commonly made in my home as a side dish along with vathal kuzhambu.This dish is made with toor dal.It is of thick consistency hence the name katti paruppu.You can also mix this dal with rice along with ghee and have it with some pappadums and mango pickle.This is my mom’s recipe.This is so simple to make and requires only few ingredients.There is no grinding work for this recipe.Also there no necessity of many masala powders other than turmeric powder.Make this recipe along with vathal kuzhambu definitely you will love the combo.Try this recipes with the given steps.
Preparation Time : 15 mins.
Cooking Time : 20 mins
Serves : 2 persons


Toor dal – 1/2 cup
Small onions – 3
Green chilli – 2
Cumin powder – 1/2 tsp
Red chilli powder – 1/4 tsp
Garlic – 4
Asafoetida – a pinch
Salt to taste
For tempering 
Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1/4 tsp
Dried Red Chilli – 2
Onion – 1/2 (finely sliced)
Curry leaves – a sprig


1.Clean and soak toor dal in sufficient amount of water for 10 minutes.Drain the dal and add it to a pressure cooker.

2.Add small onions,garlic,green chilli,asafoetida.

3.Add salt,cumin powder,red chilli powder, 1 and 1/2 cup of water.

4.Close cooker with lid.Put whistle in it and place it now in flame.

5.After 4- 5 whistles remove it from flame and allow pressure to get released by itself.Then open the lid.Mash the cooked dal

6.Heat oil in a small pan.add mustard seeds,cumin seeds,dried red chilli,sliced onion,curry leaves and saute them well.

7.Add this tempering to cooked toor dal.Katti paruppu is ready.

    just a doubt, Do we need to mash the green chilly alongwith the cooked dal or we have to take it out?

    I used to mash the chillies along with the dal. I have used only 2. It was not spicy. If u think it would be spicy you can add just 1 chilli. Thank you so much for the comment. Keep supporting and trying the recipes from our blog.
