Poondu Rasam / Garlic Rasam

Poondu Rasam / Garlic Rasam is the rasam which I commonly make than the other rasam.I will make it atleast once a week in my lunch.It helps in digestion.It a good home remedy for cold.Garlic has a lot of medicinal values.You can also have it as an appetizers.It makes you appetite well.This is my moms recipe.I love this rasam a lot.I like to have it as a soup.

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 15 mins
Serves : 4 persons

INGREDIENT REQUIRED 

Tamarind – a small lemon sized
Garlic – 8 to 10
Small onion – 4
Green chilli – 3
Tomato – 1
Curry leaves – 2 sprig
Coriander leaves – a few
Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Peppercorns – 1 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida – a pinch

METHOD

1.Soak tamarind in 1 cup of water and extract tamarind juice.

2.To a mortar add peppercorns,Cumin seeds,Small onions,Garlic,Green chillies,Curry leaves and crush them together with the pestle.Keep this crushed ingredients aside.You can also grind them in a blender.But crushing them gives more flavor to rasam.

3.To a pan add oil.Add mustard seeds and let them crackle.Add curry leaves.

4.Dice the tomatoes roughly and add it to the pan.Add asafoetida,crushed ingredients and saute them well till the tomatoes get cooked.

5.Add salt to your taste.Add turmeric powder and mix well.Add tamarind juice and 1 cup of water.

6.Allow it to boil when it starts to boil.Put off the flame and add coriander leaves.Serve it with Rice.
