Small onion Sambar / Vengaya sambar

Small onion sambar is one of my favourite sambar.Amma used to prepare this sambar often for lunch.Small onions gives nice flavor and taste to the dish.It goes well with rice,idli,dosa.You can have some stir fry or roast with it for rice.My favourite combo is Rice,small onion sambar,Potato fry,Beans with coconut stir fry.Definitely try this combo.It tastes amazing together.Lets get on to the recipe.

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 30 mins
Serves : 3 Persons

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

For cooking dal

Toor dal – 1/2 cup
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Garlic – 3 pods
Oil – few drops 
Water – 1 cup

For making Sambar

Oil – 2 tsp
Small onion – 1/2 cup
Salt to taste
Tomato – 1(finely chopped)
Tamarind juice – 1/4 cup
Sambar powder – 1 tbsp
Coriander leaves – 1 tbsp (chopped)

For tempering

Oil – 1 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Fenugreek seeds – 1/4 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Dried red chilli – 2
Curry leaves – 1 sprig

METHOD

1.Clean and soak dal for about 10 minutes.Add it to a pressure cooker along with garlic,Turmeric powder,few drops of oil and water.

2.Close cooker with lid and allow for 5 whistles.Open the lid after the pressure gets released by itself.Mash them with a ladle or masher

3.Meanwhile add oil in a kadai.Add small onions and saute them till they turn translucent.add required amount of salt and chopped tomatoes.

4.When the tomatoes turn mashy add chopped coriander leaves and sambar powder.Mix well.

5.Add cooked and mashed dal to it.Add tamarind juice.Allow it to cook.add water if required.

6.In a tadka pan add oil and temper it with the ingredients given in for tempering and Add it to Sambar.Serve it hot with Rice.
