Varuthu aracha Saala Meen (Mathi Meen) Kulambu / Sardine Fish Curry with Roasted Spices

Sardine Fish / Saala Meen is the most commonly available fish in our place throughout the year. In my home we often buy this fish.It has a unique taste.Sardine fish are one of the highest source of Omega 3 fatty acids .It is very famous in the Southern Part of India particularly Kerala and TamilNadu.This Curry is specially made with Sardine Fish by my Grandmother.It taste amazing with steamed rice. I prefer to use earthen Pot for cooking all fish curries.In my opinion It gives extra taste to my fish curry.It tastes different from usual fish curry.

Let’s get into the recipe.
Preparation Time : 20 mins
Cooking Time : 20 mins
Serves : 3 – 4 persons

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

Coconut Oil – 3 tsp
Sardine fish – 15 
Tamarind – a small lemon size
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste

For Tempering

Small Onion / Shallot – 6
Curry Leaves a spring
Fenugreek seeds – 1/4 tsp

For Roasting & Grinding

Coriander Seeds – 1 tbsp
Cumin Seeds – 1/2 tsp
PepperCorn – 1/2 tsp
Fennel Seeds – 1/4 tsp
Dried Red Chilli – 6
Grated Coconut – 1/4 Cup

METHOD

1. Clean Sardine fish and keep them aside.Soak Tamarind in two cups of water and extract the tamarind juice and reserve it for later

2.To a pan add one tsp of oil and roast coriander seeds,Cumin Seeds,Fennel Seeds,Dried Red Chilli for about two minutes.Put off the flame and finally add grated coconut to it.Roast it in that heat itself for about one minute.

3. Allow this roasted ingredients to cool down then add it to a mixie jar and blend it to a smooth fine paste by adding water.

4. To a pot add coconut oil Once it get hot add some fenugreek seed and let them sizzle.Slice the small onion and add it.

5. Saute the small onion till they turn translucent then add curry leaves,turmeric powder.

6. Add the extracted tamarind juice now.Add required amount of Salt and the blended masala paste.Mix well and bring it to boil.

7. Add cleaned Sardine fish into it.Close it with a lid and allow it to cook for about 8 minutes in a simmer flame.Sardine Fish curry is ready to be served with Rice.
