Vazhapoo Thoran / Banana Blossom Stir Fry

Banana blossoms are rich source of Vitamins and Minerals.It manages diabetes and anemia.It also helps nursing mothers.They are also good for uterus.Vazhapoo thoran is a recipe made with banana flowers stir fried with grinded coconut,chillies,cumin,shallots and garlic.The time consuming process is cleaning and chopping the flowers.In my home town a grandma used to sell this blossoms in streets.She used to carry the blossoms in a big basket made with palm leaves over her head. she costs around 5 rupees for blossoms.If we pay a extra 5 rupees she cleans,chops blossoms and give.She finishes off within 5 – 10 minutes.”PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT” this is what I learnt from her.Lets get on to the recipe.

Preparation Time : 30 minutes
Cooking Time : 20 mins
Serves : 3 persons


Banana Blossom / Vazhapoo – 1 (400 g)
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Salt to taste

For Tempering

Coconut oil – 3 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
Onion – 1 (finely sliced)
Curry leaves – a sprig

For Grinding

Grated coconut – 1/3 cup
Small onions / Shallots – 5
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Green chilli – 2
Red chilli – 1
Garlic – 1


1.Clean Vazhapoo/Banana Blossom.For this Peel the red petals one by one and take the small white color florets inside and keep them aside.Similarly peel all the red petals and take all the white florets inside.Continue till you reach the middle inner part.

2.Take each floret and remove the plastic like portion and the black headed stem.Once all the florets are cleaned.Chop them.Also chop the inner middle part.Soak them in water else its color will change brown.

3.To a mixie jar add grated coconut,small onions,green chilli,red chilli,cumin seeds and grind it into a coarse paste without adding water.

4.In a pot add cleaned and chopped banana blossoms along with turmeric powder,little salt and water.Once they are cooked drain excess water.
5.To another pan add Coconut oil.Mostly I use coconut oil for stir fries.It gives nice taste to the dish.To hot oil add mustard seeds,urad dal,curry leaves.

6.Add sliced onions.Saute them till they turn translucent.Add cooked banana blossoms and stir it well.

7.Add ground paste and mix well.Cook for few more minutes.Then put off the flame.Serve it with Rice and any Kuzhambu
