Venpongal is a traditional South Indian breakfast dish.It stole my heart during a cold morning when I was served it along with Vada, Sambar and Coconut Chutney.Then it became one of my favorite breakfast.The best way of eating this delicious food is when it is hot .Lets see how to make ven pongal easily in a pressure cooker.
Preparation Time : 5 mins
Cooking Time : 25 mins
Serves : 2 – 3 persons
Raw rice – 1 cup
Moong dal – 1/4 cup
Ghee – 3 tbsp
Ginger – 1 tbsp (finely chopped)
Asafoetida /Hing – a generous pinch
Cashew nuts – 10
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Peppercorns – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – a sprig
Salt to taste
1.Dry roast moong dal in a pan for few minutes.It gives nice aroma.Clean moong dal and raw rice by adding sufficient amount of water .
2.Drain the water and add it to a pressure cooker.Add 4 cups of water.Close the lid with whistle in it and allow for 4 whistles then put it in simmer for 10 mins.Then put off the flame.
3.After the pressure gets released open the lid.Mash them lightly.
4.In a mortar add pepper corns and crush them lightly.
5.In a pan add ghee.When it gets hot add cumin seeds,crushed pepper corns, chopped ginger,curry leaves and cashew nuts.Add Asafoetida.When they turn golden brown.Remove from the flame and add it to the mashed rice and dal.
Ven pongal is ready.
Serve it hot with Moong dal Sambar and coconut chutney.
