Drumstick curry with Coconut /Murugakkai Thengai curry

Drumstick is called as Murungakkai in Tamil and its genus name is Moringa which is derived from the Tamil word Murungai.It  is the only plant that has all amino acids in it.It contains a high level of Vitamin C.We can make a lot of dishes out of it like Sambar,Theeyal,Puli kuzhambu,Poriyal.This dish is a coconut based curry.Here is the recipe of it.
Preparation Time : 15 mins 
Cooking time : 30 mins
Serves : 3 Persons


Drumstick – 4 nos (Cut into finger sized pieces)
Salt to taste
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Onion – 1 (sliced)
Tomato -1 (chopped)
Coconut oil – 3 tsp

For seasoning 

Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – 1 sprig

For Grinding

Small onion – 3 nos
Dried red chilli – 1
Green Chilli – 2
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Grated coconut – 1/3 cup


1.Cut drumstick into finger sized pieces and cut them into half..Soak them in water.Wash them and drain them and Keep them aside.Grind small onions,dried red chilli,green chilli,cumin seeds and grated coconut into a fine smooth paste by adding water.

2To a pan add oil.Once they get hot add mustard seeds.Let them crackle then add Urad dal.Add Sliced onions and saute them till they turn translucent.

3.Add chopped tomatoes and saute them well with onions till they get mushy.Add curry leaves,then add Chopped drumstick pieces.Combine them well with the onions and Tomatoes.

4.Add required amount of salt,turmeric powder.Add about 1 cup of water and allow the drumstick to cook.Close the pan with lid.

5.When the drum stick has cooked nicely add the ground coconut paste.Rinse the jar with water add them to the pan.Allow them to cook till the drum stick has combined well with the coconut masala and raw smell has gone.

Serve it with Rice.
