Mathi Fry / Sardine fish fry/Saala meen varuval

I have already posted a specially made Curry recipe with Sardine fish/Mathi/Saala meen which is Varuthu aracha saala meen kuzhambu and now I am going to post a fry with sardine fish.Here we can get about 1 kg of sardine fish for 0.500 bz which is around 82 indian rupees.The price of fish in oman is almost same or less compared to my hometown.I always prefer to cook fresh fish.I don’t like to refrigerate and save it for another day since the taste differs from the fresh one.Whenever Mom or sis makes sardine fish fry I used to eat it as soon as she takes it out from the oil.It tastes yummy.It goes well with Rice and Fish curry or Rasam or Dal.My husband prefers to have this fry hot with a cup of Tea.Let’s see how I make it.
Preparation Time : 20 mins
Marination Time : 30 mins 
Cooking Time : 10 mins
Serves : 2 – 3 persons


Sardine fish/Mathi meen/Saala meen – 15 nos
Coconut oil for frying
Curry leaves – 2 sprig

For marination

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Red chilli powder – 2 tsp
Pepper powder – 1/2 tsp
Ginger garlic paste – 1 and 1/2 tsp
Lemon Juice – 1 tbsp
Salt to taste 


1.Clean and make deep slashes in fish.In a mixing bowl add all the ingredients given for marination along with little water and make a thick smooth paste.Then add cleaned fish and mix it well with the marination.Marinate for about 30 minutes.
2.In a pan heat oil for shallow frying.In it fry curry leaves and keep them aside.Now the curry leaves flavor will remain in the oil.
3.Now to the pan add marinated fish pieces fry it one side for some minutes till they turn golden and crisp then flip it to the other side and cook till they turn golden and crispy.Then remove them from the oil.Serve it hot with Rice.
