Dry Fish Curry / Karuvattu Kuzhambu

A simple and easy dry fish curry with Dried King fish.You can also try this curry with any dry fish.This is a version of dry fish without coconut.It tastes great with Plain Rice.I bought this dried fish from my hometown and I used to keep them in Refrigerator wrapped in ziplock covers and placed inside a airtight container.Here is the recipe for Dry fish curry/Karuvattu kuzhambu.

Preparation Time : 15 minutes 
Cooking Time : 25 minutes
Serves : 3 Persons


Dried fish Pieces – 4 pieces 

Small onions – 10 
Garlic – 5
Tomato – 1
Fenugreek seeds – 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves – 2 sprig
Tamarind – a small lemon piece
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Red chilli powder – 1 and 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder – 2 tsp
Oil – 3 tsp


1.Soak dry fish in hot water for 15 minutes it will remove excess salt and make it soft.Then clean it drain water and keep them aside.Soak tamarind in 2 cups of water and extract juice.

2.To a pot add oil.Once they get hot add fenugreek seeds,curry leaves,small onions.

3.Saute small onions in oil till they turn nice golden.Add tomatoes and saute them till they get mushy.Add turmeric powder,Red chilli powder,Coriander powder.

4.Combine the masalas well with onions and tomatoes.Add tamarind juice to it and allow it to boil.Once it starts to boil add Dried fish to it.Close it with a lid and cook for about 10 minutes.Check for salt and add if required.Dry fish curry is ready.

Serve it with Plain Rice.
