Tapioca Stir fry- Kappa Kizhangu(Maravalli kizhangu) Poriyal/Thoran

Tapioca or cassava root which is also known as Maravalli kizhangu in Tamil and Kappa kizhangu in Malayalam has several health benefits.It helps for a healthy weight gain.It helps in increasing blood circulation because they are rich in iron.It also improves digestion.It is  also a rich source of dietary fiber,good cholesterol and protein.Tapioca is quite common food in my home.Mom used to make this dish usually as a Evening Snack,Breakfast along with a Powder made with Dried Red chilli and garlic(milagai poondu podi) or for lunch along with Fish curry.It tastes yummy.Now I too follow the same in my menu.Lets see how this Kappa Kizhangu poriyal/Thoran is made.

Preparation Time: 10 mins
Cooking Time : 25 mins
Serves : 4 Persons


For pressure cooking

Tapioca/Kappa Kizhangu/Maravalli Kizhangu – 1 kg
Salt to taste
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp

For Grinding

Grated coconut – 3/4 cup
Dried Red chilli – 3
Garlic – 3 pods
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

For tempering

Coconut Oil – 2 tsp
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
Curry ;eaves – 1 sprig
Onion – 1 (finely sliced)


1.Cut tapioca into round pieces and peel off the skin.then cut them into cubes.

2.Wash tapioca nicely and add them to pressure cooker along with Turmeric powder and Salt.Add sufficient amount of water for the tapioca to cook.Cook for about 5  whistles until the tapioca gets cooked.Drain the excess water and transfer cooked tapioca to a bowl.

3.To mixie jar add Dried red chilli,garlic,cumin seeds,garlic,grated coconut and grind them coarsely without adding water.

4.To a kadai add oil.Once it get hot add mustard seeds.Let them crackle.Then add urad dal. After they turn golden add curry leaves and onion.

5.Saute till onions turn golden.Add cooked tapioca and saute them well in oil along with the onion.Then add the ground coconut paste and mix well with the Tapioca.Check for salt and add if necessary.

Tapioca Stir fry is ready.Serve it hot.
