Chemmeen Manga Charu(Malabar style Prawn Raw mango curry)

Yesterday I made this Prawn and Raw Mango curry for Lunch.It is a Malabar style recipe and I am experimenting it for the first time.It was so tasty and we all loved this curry.It was so simple and tasted yummy with Rice.I also made some Prawn fry.I got this recipe from a Malabar cuisine book which I brought back from India.I am sure I will make this curry often from now on.I had the leftover curry with Paratha at night it was also tasting yummy together.If you are a sea food lover definitely try this recipe.You will love it.

Serves : 4-5 


Shelled Prawns – 500 g

Coconut oil – 1 tsp
Onion -1 (sliced)
Green chillies – 3 (sliced)
Garlic – 10 pods
Ginger – 1 inch piece
Coriander powder – 3 tsp
Red chilli powder – 2 tsp
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Raw Mango – 1(thinly sliced)
Salt to taste

For Tempering

Coconut oil – 2 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
Fenugreek – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – 2 sprigs

For roasting and Grinding

Coconut  oil – 1 tsp
Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
Shallots/Small onion – 1/2 cup
Fennel seed – 1 tsp


1.Clean and de-vein the Prawns.Heat 1 tsp of oil in a pot and Roast coconut,small onions and fennel seeds till they turn golden brown.

2.When roasted put off the flame.Add them to a grinding jar and grind them to a smooth paste adding water.Mix this ground paste in 1/2 cup of water and keep them aside.

3.Heat 1 tsp of oil and Fry sliced onions till they turn translucent.Add sliced green chillies,crushed garlic,crushed ginger and fry them well in oil.

4.Add Chilli powder,Turmeric powder,Coriander powder and mix well with the onions.Add sliced Raw mangoes,required amount of salt and 1 cup of water.

5.Add Prawns.Stir them well and Cover the pot with a lid and cook for about 5 mins.Add the ground coconut masala. Bring it to boil and then remove from flame.

6.Heat 2 tbsp of Oil.Splutter Mustard seeds,Fenugreek seeds and curry leaves in it.Add this tempering to the curry.

Serve hot with Rice.
