Yam Tamarind chutney – கருணைக்கிழங்கு புளி சட்னி(Pidikarunai puli chutney)

This dish is made with yam which is of our fist size.It is a good cure for piles and constipation.It is a great side dish for Rice,chapati,and dosa. It goes well with all Kuzhambu varieties.This dish is a South Indian style preparation in which mashed yam is cooked with fried small onions and tamarind juice.Tamarind removes the itchiness of the yam and gives a nice tangy taste to the dish.Mom used to make this recipe often with Pidi karunai(yam) and I love it.Lets see how to make it.

Serves : 3 Persons

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

Yam/Pidi Karunai – 2 

Tamarind – small gooseberry size

For Tempering

Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Small onions / shallots  – 1/2 cup (finely chopped)
Green chillies – 3
Curry leaves – 1 sprig
Salt to taste

METHOD

1.Soak tamarind in 1 cup of water and extract tamarind juice.

2.To a pressure cooker add yam along with sufficient water and allow it to cook for 3-4 whistles or until soft.After the pressure got released.Take the boiled yam and peel off the skin.Mash the yam nicely.

3.Heat oil in a pan.Add mustard seeds to it.Let them crackle.Then add urad dal. Fry till they turn golden.Add chopped small onions.Fry till the small onions get translucent.Add green chillies,curry leaves,turmeric powder and mix well.

4.Add in the mashed yam and mix well with the onions.Add tamarind water to it and mix them all well together.Add required amount of salt and cook till the water gets reduced and become thick in consistency.

Serve with Cooked Rice.
