Jack Fruit Seed Stir fry with Coconut -பலாக்கொட்டை பொரியல்(Palaakottai Poriyal)

Jackfruit is called as Palaa in Tamil and chakka in malayalam.Ripe and unripe fruit is used to make recipes.Even the seeds can be used.They have a sweet taste in them.My mom used to make this  stir fry recipe with the seeds.I love this recipe a lot.We used to dry the seeds after eating the fruit.Drying it for a week is enough.Mom used to make this for Lunch along with Rice and Sambar.I made this dish with store bought dried jack fruit seeds.Save seeds after eating jackfruit to make this tasty stir fry.

Cooking Time : 15 mins
Serves : 3 Persons


To Pressure cook

Dried Jack fruit seed – 150 gm (25 nos)
For Tempering
Oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp

For Seasoning

Salt to taste
Asafoetida – a pinch 

For Grinding

Grated Coconut – 3/4 cup(loosely packed)
Small onions/Shallot – 5 
Garlic – 2
Cumin – 1/2 tsp
Dried Red chilli – 3 (adjust to your spiciness)


1.Peel the skin of dried Jack fruit seeds.Add them to a pressure cooker.Add water till the seeds are immersed.Cook for 2 whistles.Take the cooked jackfruit seeds.Slice the seeds.
2.To a grinding jar add grated coconut,shallots,garlic,cumin and dried red chilli.Grind these ingredients to a coarse paste without adding water.
3.Heat oil in a kadai/Pan.Add mustard seeds.Let them crackle.Add urad dal.Let them turn golden.Then add curry leaves.
4.Add sliced jackfruit seeds,asafoetida,turmeric powder and ground coconut paste.
5.Add required amount of taste.Fry them well until the added coconut paste becomes dry.
Serve With Rice and any Kuzhambu Varieties.
