Rasam is quiet commonly made not only during cold days but also on regular days for lunch.Before I used to hate rasam for lunch.but I love to have it like a soup.Now I started to love it for my lunch along with Rice.My hubby is also a Rasam lover.So I make different rasams each week.One such rasam is Paruppu rasam.This is my mom’s recipe.This has been my all time favorite rasam.I love to have it with rice along with a vegetable fry,Poriyal especially Potato fry,brinjal fry or Senai Kizhangu fry.This rasam is made without rasam powder and simple to make.We make it with cooked toor dal.

Preparation time : 10 mins
Cooking Time : 20 mins
Serves : 4 Persons
Toor dal – 1/4 cup
Oil – 3 tsp
Tamarind – a small lemon size
Peppercorns – 1 tsp
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Garlic – 7 pods
Curry leaves – a few
Coriander leaves – a few
Asafoetida – 1/8 tsp
Tomato – 1 (medium size finely chopped)
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Red chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
1.Soak toor dal in sufficient amount of water for about 15 minutes.Drain water and add them to a pressure cooker along with water.Cook for about 2 -3 whistles.
2.Soak tamarind in water and extract juice.In a mortar crush pepper,cumin seeds and garlic.
3.To the cooked toor dal add tamarind extract,turmeric powder,chilli powder,required amount of salt.Mix them all well.check for sourness,salt and add accordingly.
4..In a pan heat oil.add crushed ingredients to it.Saute well in oil.Add curry leaves,Asafoetida,chopped tomatoes.Saute tomatoes till they are cooked well.Add the toor dal mixture.Add coriander leaves.Allow it to boil well.
Serve Paruppu Rasam hot with Rice.
