Mutton Fry – மட்டன் வறுவல்

Hi all. Belated Onam and Eid wishes. I was so busy last week as it was eid holidays. We celebrated our eid in Salalah, Oman. Will soon make a post on how we planned it and the places we visited there. Today I have come with a super duper mutton fry. I have made it in a spicer version. Adjust the spiciness to your taste. This is our favourite dish. Boneless mutton is perfect for this dish and I made this dish with the Qurbani mutton we received from my hubby’s colleague. I made this mutton fry along with Rice and dal. It tastes simply awesome. You can have it as an appetizer or as a side dish. If you are a mutton lover definitely try this recipe. Even if u don’t like mutton try it u will love it for sure.

Serves : 4 Persons



For Cooking Mutton

Mutton – 3/4 kg(Boneless)
Ginger garlic paste – 1 tbsp
Lemon  – 1
Salt to taste

For Marination

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Red chilli powder – 2 and 1/2 tsp
Coriander powder – 1 tsp
Pepper powder – 1 tsp
Fennel  powder – 1 tsp
Garam masala – 1/2 tsp
Salt (optional)
Ginger garlic paste – 1/2 tbsp(optional)

For Frying

Oil – 2 tbsp
Curry leaves – 2 sprig
Coriander leaves – a few(finely chopped)
Green chilli – 3


1. Cut the mutton into small cube pieces. Clean and wash the mutton pieces.I washed them with turmeric powder. It removes the fat smell from the mutton. Add the mutton pieces to the pressure cooker. To it add ginger garlic paste, salt. Squeeze the lemon into it. Lemon will help to tenderize the mutton. Mix them well together. Add 1 cup of water and pressure cook for 7-8 whistles till the mutton is cooked well. If there is water cook till the water is completely reduced and the mutton is dried.
2. Remove the cooked mutton pieces to a mixing bowl. Add Turmeric powder, Red chilli powder, Coriander powder, Pepper powder, Fennel powder and Garam masala. Add ginger garlic paste and salt if required.
3.Heat oil in a kadai or pan.Once it gets hot. Add a sprig of curry leaves. Now add the marinated mutton pieces. Fry them well till they get crisp out. Finally add curry leaves, green chilli and coriander leaves. Mix them all together. Remove from Flame.
Serve mutton fry hot with lemon wedges and onion slices.
