Vermicelli Upma-Semiya Upma -சேமியா உப்புமா-Vermicelli Recipes

Vermicelli upma is a simple and quite common South Indian Breakfast. It’s so simple and easy so that it can be easily and quickly made. I am not a great fan of upma. But as it can be made quickly I prefer it to make for Breakfast and moreover, my husband loves it. Before my marriage when I was at home. Whenever mom makes this upma we used to run away from it so there will be upma left over. At evening when comes back from her work she used to add sugar to it and make balls of it and feed me and my sis. It will taste really heavenly and it will finish in a matter of minutes. This is Mom’s magic…….
Here is the recipe for Vermicelli/Semiya Upma
Preparation Time: 5 mins
Cooking Time : 10 mins
Serves : 2 Persons


Vermicelli – 1 cup
Water – 1 and 3/4 cup
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Chana dal – 1 tbsp
Urad dal – 1 tsp
Ginger – 1/2 tbsp(chopped)
Green chilli – 1 (chopped)
Onion – 1/2 (thinly sliced)
Curry leaves – a sprig
Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
Asafoetida – a pinch
Salt to taste


1.Dry roast vermicelli in medium flame until they turn slightly golden. Then transfer them to a plate.
2.Heat Oil/ghee in a pan.When oil gets hot,add mustard seeds.Let them crackle then add chana dal,urad dal.Fry them to golden.Add chopped ginger,green chilli,curry leaves,sliced onions.Saute them well in oil till they turn light golden.
3.Add asafoetida,turmeric powder and salt.Mix well with the onions.Add water to it.Bring it to a rolling boil.Add the roasted vermicelli.Stir well to avoid lumps.Cook till the water is completely absorbed.Switch off the flame.Allow it cool down for few minutes.Then fluff it up with a fork.Serve Vermicelli upma with Pickle or Sugar.
