Today My lunch was Rice, Rasam, Chettinad raw banana curry and mango pickle. Having this raw banana curry with hot rasam and Rice went well together. I was so tasty to my taste buds and heart. Chettinad food uses a variety of spices and freshly ground masala. Thus making the dishes more flavorful and aromatic. This particular dish I have tried for the first time in a hotel. It was served with the thali. I loved the taste and tried it with a recipe from a Chettinad recipe book. Raw banana is marinated with masalas and fried then it is added to an onion tomato curry.Now let’s see how to make this Vazhakkai curry.

Serves : 2 Persons


For marinating and frying

  • Raw banana – 3
  • Oil – 2tbsp
  • Salt
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2tsp
  • Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp

For curry

  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
  • Fenugreek seeds – a pinch
  • Fennel seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Onion – 1 (chopped)
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – a sprig
  • Tomato – 1(chopped)
  • Salt to taste
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1 tsp
  • Cumin powder – 1 tsp
  • Tamarind extract (dilute) – 2 tbsp


  1. Trim both the ends of the raw banana. Peel off the skin of it and slice them into pieces. Take the sliced pieces in a mixing bowl. To it add salt,Turmeric powder, red chilli powder and ginger garlic paste. Mix them well. To a frying pan add oil and fry the marinated banana pieces on both sides to golden. Then transfer the fried pieces to a plate or bowl.

2. To a kadai or pan add heat. Once it is hot, add Mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, Fennel seeds. Then add chopped onions to it. Saute the onions to translucent. Add Curry leaves and ginger garlic paste. Saute well. Add chopped tomatoes and mix well. Cook till the tomatoes get mash up. Place the flame low and Add salt, red chilli powder, Coriander powder and Cumin powder. Mix well the masala with the onions and tomatoes. Add about 1/2 cup of water and place in medium flame.After 2 minute add the fried raw banana and add tamarind extract to it and mix well. Chettinad raw banana curry is ready to be served.
