Coconut Rice – Thengai Sadam

Coconut Rice or Thengai Sadam is a most common variety rice of South India. It is so simple to make and even doesn’t require much preparation. We can make it in a jiffy. You can also use leftover rice for this. I have used freshly cooked rice here. I have taken 1 cup rice and cooked in sufficient water and once it’s cooked.

I have drain the water off. You can also cook rice in pressure cooker with 2 cups of water for 1 cup of Rice. Coconut rice can be had along with pickle, appalam(papadams), potato fry or any other fry … I had it today along with homemade vadagams(fryums), lemon pickle, Curd and brinjal Curry. Let’s see how to make this simple and easy to make coconut Rice.

Preparation Time : 15 mins

Cooking Time : 10 mins

Serves : 2 Persons


  • Rice – 1 cup
  • Coconut oil – 1 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal – 2 tsp
  • Chana dal – 1 tbsp
  • Cashew nuts – 10 to 12
  • Ginger chopped – 1/2 tbsp
  • Green chillies – 2(slited)
  • Dried Red chillies – 2(broken to pieces)
  • Curry leaves – a sprig
  • Salt to taste
  • Asafoetida /Hing – 1/8 tsp
  • Grated coconut – 1.5 Cup


Cook rice. Grate the coconut. Keep all the ingredients ready. Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add Mustard seeds let them splutter. Then add Urad dal, channa dal, Cashew nuts. Fry them to golden. Add chopped ginger, slited green chillies and dried red chilli pieces to it. Saute them well. Add Hing. Then add grated coconut. Saute them for a minutes the color of it should not change. Cook in low to medium flame. Add salt as per taste. Add cooked rice to it and give a nice mix. Then switch off the flame. Serve hot.
