I hope this Chutney will be different from the other smoked Brinjal Chutney available over the net. This Chutney is made with smoked Brinjal. It is the key ingredient of this Chutney. This Chutney is usually prepared at my home along with Rice and Fish curry for lunch. Sometimes for lunch, it is also made to go as an accompaniment for mutton curry. For the first time When I cooked this Chutney for my husband along with fish curry, he felt so weird about this Chutney. I guess you too may feel the same about this combo but trust me it’s so tasty together. Whenever I cook this brinjal Chutney I remain nostalgic about the Saturday’s when mom used to cook fish curry, fish fry along with Sutta kathrikai(brinjal Chutney). Mom used to cut banana leaves from the plantain tree at our backyard and serve food for us in it. Since all the other days were working days. Only on Saturday, it will be fish day and we all will eat together at lunch. It was so lovely. Some times mom used to replace brinjal Chutney with kadala thogayal. Those days were so happy. Now I have to cook for myself😭. Mom always uses this type of big fat brinjal for making this Chutney. Similarly, I too make this dish with the same type of brinjal and I have not tried with another type of brinjals. Also, use shallots for this as they give a nice taste than onions and they are so good for health. Let’s get into the recipe of this Chutney.

Serves : 4
- Brinjal – 2 (Big size purple ones)
- Shallots chopped – 1 Cup
- Green chillies – 2(chopped)
- Salt to taste
- Tamarind extract – 1/3 Cup or as per taste
1.Take brinjal with stalk in it. Smoke the brinjal in direct flame. Char them completely from about 6 minutes. Turn them holding the stalk with the help of a tong. After they completely charred remove them from flame. Place them in plate and remove the charred skin. Also remove the stalk in it.
2.Take the prepared brinjal in a bowl. Mash it well with your hands. To it add the chopped shallots, chopped green chillies, salt to taste and tamarind extract. Check and Add salt and tamarind extract as required.
