Paneer Butter Masala

Paneer(cottage cheese) is the most common type of cheese used in Indian cuisine. Dishes made with paneer are usually rich in taste. Today I made this butter paneer masala along with peas pulao for lunch and we had the same masala along with Naan for dinner. Both pulao and Naan tasted well with the paneer butter masala. It is a so simple recipe to cook yet a rich one. It is also a great recipe to cook on a special day or for parties. You can also look into my other paneer recipes.

Now Let us get into recipe.

Preparation Time : 10 mins

Cooking Time : 30 mins

Serves : 4 Persons


  • Butter – 4 tbsp
  • Oil – 1 tbsp
  • Chopped Onion – 1 Cup
  • Chopped Tomatoes – 2 Cups
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1/2 tbsp
  • Cashew nuts – 12 to 15 nos
  • Salt
  • Red chilli powder – 1.5 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1/2 tbsp
  • Bayleaves – 1
  • Cinnamon – 1 inch piece
  • Cloves – 3
  • Kashmiri chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Garam masala – 1/2 tsp
  • Sugar – 1 tsp
  • Paneer – 200g(cut into cubes)
  • Kasuri methi/dried fenugreek leaves – 1 tsp
  • Cream – 3 tbsp


1.Melt Butter in a pan also add a tbsp of oil in it. To it add chopped onions. Saute them to light pink then add chopped tomatoes to it. Saute them well. Let them get little mushy. Add ginger garlic paste to it. Saute until the raw smell goes off. Add cashews to it. Allow them cook. Then add salt, red chilli powder and coriander powder. Mix them well. Cook for few more minutes. Then switch off the flame. Allow it to cool down. Then grind them to a smooth paste.

2.In a pan melt 2 tbsp of butter. Add Bayleaves, Cinnamon and Cloves to it. Let them sizzle. Then add the ground onion tomato paste to it. Saute them well in oil. Add about 1 cup of water. To it add Kashmiri Red chilli powder and garam masala. Cover it with a lid and cook it for about 2 minutes. Then add tsp of sugar to it. Mix them well. Pre Soak paneer in hot water for about 10 minutes. This will make the paneer soft. Add the paneer cubes to the gravy. Cook for 2 minutes. Crush the dried fenugreek leaves with the hand and add it. Cook for a minute. Finally add cream to it and switch off the flame.
