Chemmeen Varuthathu – Kerala Prawn Fry

Prawn is my favorite seafood. Especially I am so addictive to Prawn Fry. I have been asking my husband to get prawns for a long time. Finally Yesterday evening my husband bought it. They were medium sized prawns. I thought of making prawn fry. But he was insisting me to make some curry or gravy recipe and post it in the blog. But I don’t want to leave my fry idea. I convinced him saying that I will get some kerala style fry recipe from Aunty and cook it. I went to her and asked for the recipe and noted it down. My husband helped with deveining and cleaning the prawns. I marinated them with the masala powders and refrigerated last night itself. You can also marinate them overnight or allow them Marinate for 30 mins before frying. I made it along with Rice, Sambar and Bittergourd Poriyal for Today’s Lunch.

Preparation Time : 40 mins

Cooking Time : 20 mins

Serves : 2 – 3

  • Prawns – 500g(medium sized,30 nos)
  • Coconut Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1/2 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Kashmiri red chilli powder – 1 tbsp
  • Pepper powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Fennel powder
  • Garam masala powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Salt – 1/2 tsp
  • Lemon juice – 1/2 tbsp or 1/2 lemon
  • Curry leaves – 2 Sprigs

1.Remove the shells, Devein, clean and wash the prawns well. Then add ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder, Kashmiri red chilli powder, pepper powder, fennel powder, garam masala powder, salt and Lemon juice. Mix them all together. Check for salt and add if required. Allow it to marinate for at least 10 mins.

2.Heat oil in a pan. Add the marinated prawns and allow them to fry on one side. Add curry leaves to it. When they have turned golden in one side flip to the other side. Cook till the other side also gets golden. Then remove from the oil. I fried the prawns in 2 batches adding 1 tbsp of oil each time.

Serve hot with Rice or as a Starter.
