Thayir Sadam – Curd Rice – தயிர் சாதம்

My daughter’s favorite food is curd Rice. If I have to arrange the food in a ranking sequence based on my daughter wishlist curd Rice will stay at the top with no competition. I know, not only my daughter all the kids love curd Rice. I too love it a lot. Obviously, all people love curd Rice not only for the distinct taste but also it is the easiest dish that can be cooked. All people whose staple food is rice would have definitely tasted Curd Rice at least once. I used to make this curd rice irrespective of what the climate is as it is a favorite food of my family. I have a lot of lunch box memories with curd rice and Potato fry of my school and college days. Mostly everyone will have such memories.

Yesterday I prepared Curd rice along with Potato fry and Mango pickle and had it for lunch.

Let’s see how to make Curd rice.

Preparation Time : 30 mins

Cooking Time: 40 mins

Serves : 3


Rice – 1 cup

Water – 6 cup

Salt to taste

Butter – 2 tbsp

Milk – 1 and 1/2 Cup

Curd – 1/2 Cup

For Tempering

Gingelly oil – 2 tbsp

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Urad dal – 1 tsp

Chana dal – 1 tbsp

Dried Red chilli – 3 (broken into pieces)

Curry leaves – 2 sprigs


1.Wash Rice well in water and soak it in water for about 30 mins. Then boil water in a pot. When it has come to a rolling boil. Drain the water from the soaked rice and it to the boil. Allow the rice to cook. After sometimes the rice will be cooked well and the water will be almost absorbed. Now mash the rice well with a ladle or masher. Switch off the flame.

2. Add required salt to it and mix well. Add butter to the rice. Adding butter gives a nice creamy taste. Add milk, curd and mix well with Rice.

3. In a tadka pan heat oil. Add Mustard seeds. Let them splutter. Then add chana dal, urad dal. Fry them to golden. Add broken red chilli pieces, curry leaves. Now add this tempering to the rice and mix well.

Serve with pickle, veggie fry
