Ellu Sadam – Sesame seed(til) Rice – எள்ளு சாதம்

Variety Rice is always a saver on a lazy day or when you have to cook only for yourself. Sesame seeds have enormous health benefits. They are a rich source of iron. Making ellu sadam is so simple. We have to roast the ingredients and mix with the cooked rice. I usually use black sesame seeds. You can also use white sesame seeds. I am a huge lover of sesame seeds taste and flavour. There were days in my childhood when I was crazy about it and used to eat it like that itself. Hence I love all dishes made out of it.

This rice goes well with Pappadums(Appalam),fryums or Potato chips. This recipe is so easy to prepare, healthy and tasty too.

Here is the recipe for ellu Sadam/Sesame seed rice.

Preparation Time : 15 mins + 15 mins(for cooking rice)

Cooking Time: 15 mins

Serves : 3


Rice – 1Cup or Cooked rice – 4 cups (loosely packed)

For Powder

Sesame seeds – 1/4 Cup

Oil – 1tsp

Channa dal – 1 tbsp

Urad dal – 1tbsp

Dried Red chillies – 7

For Tempering

Gingelly oil – 2 tbsp

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Channa dal – 1 tbsp

Urad dal – 1 tsp

Groundnut – 1/4 cup

Dried Red chillies – 3

Curry leaves – 2 sprigs

Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Salt to taste


1. Dry Roast Sesame seeds in low flame for 3 minutes. Transfer it to a plate Then to the pan add 1 tsp of oil and roast channa dal, urad dal and dried red chillies for 2 minutes in medium flame till it turns golden. Switch off the flame and Remove the Roasted ingredients from the pan. Allow them to cool down and grind them to a powder.

2.In a pan heat 2 tbsp of oil. Add Mustard seeds. Let it splutter. Then add Urad dal, channa dal and groundnuts. Fry them till they turn golden. Add dried red chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida to it. Then add Turmeric powder. Switch off the flame. Add the cooked rice and ground powder. Add salt if required and mix well.

Serve with Appalam,fryums,Thuviyal/Chutney or Pickle.
