Keerai Thuvaran – Cheera Thoran – Red Amaranth Leaves Stir-fry with Coconut

Keerai or Greens are so nutritious and they are rich in iron. It is so good to add them to meal regularly. At home, we used to make poriyal,thoran, kootu, kulambu, Kadaiyal. Whatever the dishes maybe I love greens and veggies a lot. I love to mix them with rice and have it. Arai Keerai Kadaiyal is my favorite. This Keerai Thuvaran /Thoran is a south Indian style stir fry made with Red Amarnath leaves (Thanda keerai/Cheera) along with coconut, garlic, cumin seeds and dried red chillies. It is a healthy side dish to go along with Rice.

Serves: 2


Oil – 1tbsp

Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp

Onion – 1(small-sized, sliced)

Keerai – 1 bunch

Salt as required

For Grinding

Coconut pieces – 1/2 cup

Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp

Garlic – 1 clove

Dried Red chillies – 3

Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp


1.Remove the leaves from the stalk. Discard infected leaves if any. If the stem part is tender. You can use them too. Wash them well in water. Then Chop the leaves roughly into small pieces.

2. Grind coconut, Cumin seeds, garlic, Turmeric powder, dried red chilli coarsely without adding water.

3.Heat oil in a pan. Add Mustard seeds. Let them splutter. Then add the sliced onions into it. Saute it for 2 minutes. Then add the chopped leaves. Saute it for a minute. Then add salt as required and cook on low flame until it gets cooked. Add the ground masala to it and mix well. Saute it for few minutes until the raw smell leaves. Switch off the flame. Keerai thoran is ready to be served.
