Papaya Thoran

Hi. How are you all?. Hope everyone is doing well. Today’s recipe is about making papaya thoran. Papaya is most commonly available in the backyard garden in our places. Papaya – nice a lovely fruit. I love it a lot. We also get ripe papayas here but they are costly mostly from India or Srilanka. Also, local papayas are available here. They cost about 0.500 baisa (~ 93 Indian rupees) per kg. Not only ripe ones also raw papayas are available. They can be used to make many dishes. Out of it pulikari which is a dish from Nagercoil served along with ghee rice or biryani is my favorite. This thoran tastes like a cabbage thoran. It goes well as a side dish for rice and curry or Sambar.

Serves : 3


Raw Papaya – 1 (peeled, deseeded and Grated) or grated raw papaya – 2 cups

Shallots – 8 (sliced)

Green chillies – 4 (sliced)

Garlic – 2(chopped)

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

Curry leaves – 2 sprigs

Salt to taste

Grated coconut – 1/2 cup

Coconut oil -. 1.5 tbsp

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp


1.Peel the skin of raw papaya. Wash them well. Cut them into half and remove the seeds. Then grate them finely.

2. Take the grated raw papaya in a bowl. To it add sliced shallots, chopped garlic, sliced green chillies, curry leaves, grated coconut, Turmeric powder, Cumin seeds and salt to taste. Mix them well with the hands.

3. Heat oil in a pan. Add Mustard seeds. Let them splutter then add the papaya mixture. Saute them in oil for a minute then cover and cook for about 10 – 15 minutes in low flame.

Serve with rice and curry or dal or Sambar.
