At home, Mom doesn’t cook crab at first. Even we don’t know how to clean or cook it. Our neighbour used to make this crab masala so tasty and share with us. It was our first time we tasted crab. We loved the crab meat and the masala which inspired us to cook crab at our home too. We learnt how to clean it from our neighbour as well as from the brother who sells fish.
The first recipe we tried with crab was this masala which our neighbour shared with us. I love to eat it plain more than having it as a side dish. Even though eating it is time-consuming it is worth tasting it.
I prepared this masala along with Rice and Rasam.

Serves: 2 to 3
To roast and grind
Oil – 1tbsp
Peppercorns – 1tsp
Fenugreek seeds – a pinch
Fennel seeds – 1 tsp
Garlic – 7 (sliced)
Green chillies – 7
Ginger – a small piece
Coriander leaves – a cup (chopped)
Grated Coconut – 3/4 cup
Poppy seeds – 1 tsp
Oil – 2 tbsp
Onion – 2 Cup (chopped)
Tomato – 3/4 cup (chopped)
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
Crab – 3/4 kg
Salt to taste
Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
Water – 1 cup
1.Clean the crab and wash them well with water. Keep the ingredients ready.
2. Heat oil in a pot. Add peppercorns, fenugreek seeds, fennel seeds, garlic and ginger pieces, green chillies, Coriander leaves, grated coconut and roast them well in oil.
3. Grind the mixture. You can add a teaspoon of poppy seeds and grind them into a smooth paste adding water.
4. In a pot or pan, add oil. Then add chopped onions. Saute the onions till it turns golden. Add chopped tomatoes. Saute them. The tomatoes should turn mushy. Then add turmeric powder to it. Cook until the oil starts to appear.
5. Add the cleaned crab pieces to it. Mix it well with the masala. Cover and cook for 5 minutes. Then add the ground masala paste to it and mix well. Add water and salt as required and mix well. Add curry leaves and allow it to cook in low flame for 10 minutes.
Serve hot with Rice or Roti.
