Masala vadai – Masal vadai – Chana dal vadai – மசால் வடை

A crispy snack that goes well with Tea or coffee. It has been our only breakfast too at many times. Also during Ramadan, it used to be one of the snack frequently made for iftar. It tastes so tastier when had hot. It also tastes yummy with kanji or pazham kanji.

Preparation Time : 3 hrs

Cooking Time: 30 mins

Makes: 18 vadas


Chana dal – 1Cup

Onion – 1/2 Cup (chopped)

Green chillies – 3 or 4 (chopped)

Chopped ginger – 1 tbsp

Chopped Coriander – 1/4 cup

Chopped curry leaves – 1/4 cup

Fennel seeds – 1 tsp

Salt to taste

Oil for frying


1.Wash Chana dal well in water and soak them in water for 3 hours. Then drain the water.

2. To the Grinding jar add soaked and drained chana dal to it. Save about 1/3 Cup of the chana dal to add later. Ground the chana dal coarsely. Then transfer the ground chana dal to a mixing bowl. Also, add the saved chana dal to it.

3. To the mixing bowl, add chopped onions, chopped ginger, chopped green chillies, chopped coriander and chopped curry leaves, Fennel seeds and salt. Mix them all together with hands.

4.Heat oil for frying in a pan. Make patties out of the mixture and drop them in oil. Fry in batches in medium flame to a golden brown.

Serve hot with Chutney or Tea.
