Pacha payaru Kuzhambu – Green gram curry

Green gram or mung bean is commonly used in our recipes. We usually make sundal(chat), curry, gravy,namkeens, kanji(congee) out of it. They are so healthy and nutritious. I cooked this Green Gram curry today. It goes well with Rice. My lunch was rice, green gram curry, string beans stir fry, egg omelette and coconut thogayal. Certain dishes smell make us tempted to eat it. I am addicted to this curry for its aroma and taste. The combined aroma of green gram, coconut and cumin seeds is always so appetizing for me.

Cooking Time : 30 mins

Serves : 4

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Salt to taste

To pressure cook

Green gram – 3/4 cup

Shallots – 6

Green chillies – 5

Garlic – 6 to 7 pods

Water – 1.5 cup

For Grinding

Grated coconut – 3/4 cup

Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

For Tempering

Coconut oil – 1.5 tbsp

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Dried red chillies – 3

Curry leaves – 2 sprigs

METHOD

1.Dry Roast green gram in low flame for 4 to 5 minutes until a nice aroma comes out.Then add water and allow it to soak in it for 15 minutes.

2. Drain the water completely.Add the soaked green gram into the pressure cooker.To it add shallots, green chillies, garlic and 1.5 cups of water.Pressure cook for 4 whistles.Then switch off the flame.

3.Grind grated coconut and cumin seeds into a fine paste adding water.

4.Add the ground paste into the cooked green gram.Add salt, turmeric powder into it and add 1.5 cups of water or as required and mix well.Put it in the flame and allow it to boil.Then switch off the flame.

5.In a tadka pan, heat coconut oil.Add mustard seeds, red chillies, curry leaves.Then add the tempering to the curry.

Green gram curry is ready.

Serve with Rice.
