Raw papaya stir-fry – Pappali Kai poriyal

My husband bought Raw papaya last week and insisted me to cook something with that. So I said that I will make pulikari out of it. This pulikari recipe I learnt it from my aunt who is from Nagercoil. It is a dish of mixed taste, and it is served mostly with ghee rice(nei soru) or biryani there. I love that dish a lot with nei soru. But as some of the ingredients required were not available at home.I didn’t try it and I didn’t feel like cooking any other recipes out of it. This week fully whenever I asked my husband what I can cook for lunch he was asking me to cook raw papaya but I kept on skipping that veggie. Today I finally cooked this stir fry as it is so simple and can be made in no time, also I can escape from my hubby bugging.

Today my lunch was Rice,Toor dal,Raw papaya stirfry and egg omlette.

Serves : 3

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

Oil – 1 tbsp

mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Garlic – 7 pods(crushed)

Shallots – 6 (crushed)

Raw papaya – 2 cups (chopped) , around 400g

Curry leaves – a sprig

Salt to taste

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Red chilli powder – 1/2 tsp

Chilli flakes – 2 tsp (adjust as per your taste)

METHOD

1.Peel the skin of raw papaya. Cut them into half. Remove the seed part if any. Wash them well. Then cut them into small pieces. In a pan, heat oil. Add mustard seeds. let them crackle. Then add crushed, crushed shallots and chopped raw papaya. Saute them well in oil.

2.When the papaya is half cooked, add salt to taste, curry leaves, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and chilli flakes. Mix well and allow it to cook until it is cooked well and soft.

Raw papaya stir fry is ready.

Serve with Rice and sambar, dal, rasam..
