Pepper liver – Milagu eeral – Eeral milagu masala

We cook mutton liver quite often at our home. This pepper liver is my mom’s recipe. It goes well with rice and biryani. At home, on eid ul Adha lunch this pepper liver will be there for sure along with mutton biryani. or sometimes on Sundays along with Rice/ Ghee rice and mutton curry This can be made as a gravy or a dry one. This pepper liver also goes well with Parotta, dosa.

Chicken liver with Potato

Let’s see how to cook it.

Preparation Time : 25 mins

Cooking Time : 45 mins

Serves : 5


oil – 2.5 tbsp + 2 tbsp

Onion – 3

Pandan leaves – a few( optional)

Salt to taste

Ginger garlic paste – 1.5 tbsp

Liver – 1 kg

curry leaves – a few

For dry roasting and grinding

cinnamon – 2 inch piece

cardamom – 2

Cloves – 4

Peppercorns – 1.5 tbsp

Cumin seeds – 3/4 tbsp

Fennel seeds – 3/4 tbsp


1.Dry roast cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, peppercorns, cumin seeds, fennel seeds for 1 to 2 minutes in low flame until a nice aroma comes from it. Then switch off it. Immediately transfer it to a plate. Allow it to cool down. Then grind it to a powder.

2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker. Add sliced onions, pandan leaves, a little salt. Saute the onions to golden. Add ginger-garlic paste. Saute until its raw smell leaves.

3.Cut the liver into small cubes.Wash them well in water and keep it ready. Add the liver into the pressure cooker and mix well.Saute it well until it releases water.Then add the ground masala to it and add 1.5 cups of water.Pressure cook until the liver gets cooked.

4.Heat oil in a pan.Add the cooked liver into it.Also add curry leaves into it.Check for salt and add as requred. Mix well.Allow it cook in low flame until the oil begins to appear on the top and the gravy has become thick.

Pepper liver is ready.

Serve with rice and rasam, dal or sambar, Biryani, roti, chapati, parotta, ghee rice, dalcha and mutton curry.
