Vazhaipoo Masi poriyal -Vazhapoo masi karuvadu poriyal – Banana flower dried maldive fish stir-fry

A stir-fry with the combination of vazhaipoo/banana flower along with dried maldive fish/Masi karuvadu.At home we used to add dried maldive fish with veggies and make stir-fry quite often.Also we some times add them in ada dosa batter too.

The masi powder which mom prepared for me at last vacation got completed. So was searching for it in grocery shops. Finally got it in K.M hypermarket.100g was 1.200 omr. It was not a big piece but it was like pound small pieces. Then after bringing it home I have ground it to a powder, not a smooth one just coarsely and transferred it into an airtight glass jar and kept it in the fridge.

This stir fry goes well with rice and sambar, dal, egg coconut milk curry or rasam.

Let’s see how to cook it.

Serves : 3

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

Coconut oil – 1.5 tbsp

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

shallots – 15 nos(sliced)

Garlic – 6 pods(chopped)

Green chillies – 4 (sliced)

vazhaipoo/Banana flower – 2(small size)

masi/Dried maldive fish – 3 tbsp

chilli flakes – 1/2 tbsp

Salt to taste

METHOD

1.Clean the banana flower, chop them and put them in a bowl of water to avoid it from changing into black colour.

2.Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, let them crackle. Then add cumin seeds, chopped garlic, sliced shallots, sliced green chillies. Saute them for a minute.

3. Drain the water completely from the banana flower and Add the chopped vazhaipoo or banana flower. Mix well. Add a little salt. Cover and cook for about 7- 8 mins in medium flame and stir them in between. Then add the masi/Maldive fish, chilli flakes, curry leaves and mix well. Check for salt and add if required. Cover and cook in low flame for 10 mins and stir them in between.

Vazhaipoo masi poriyal is ready.

Serve with Rice and Sambar,dal,egg coconut milk curry or rasam.
