Puli sadam – One pot puli sadam – Puliyodarai -Tamarind Rice

I am a die-hard fan of puliyodarai, Who is ready to eat it for the three meals in a day. So is my husband and daughter. I have already posted the recipe of my moms puliyodarai which is my all-time favourite. That puliyodarai is prepared by preparing the puli kachal and then mixing it with the cooked rice. This puli Sadam is a shorter version and it is a one-pot recipe. As it is a one-pot recipe you can prepare it easily and without much work. You can have it with boiled egg, potato fry, coriander (malli)thogayal or ellu(sesame) thogayal. I made it along with cauliflower fry today.

This recipe I learnt it from my aunt. I love this way of puliyodarai too. As it is so easy to make on a lazy day or when I need to make lunch in less time I prefer this and we can cook it easily with what we have at home.

Preparation Time : 30 mins

Cooking Time : 25 mins

Serves : 2 – 3

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

Sesame oil – 4 tbsp

mustard sseeds – 1/2 tsp

Chana dal – 2 tbsp

Urad dal – 1 tbsp

Peanuts – 4 tbsp

Green chillies – 4(Cut into halves)

Dried red chillies – 4 ( broken into pieces)

Curry leaves – 2 sprigs

asafoetida – 1/4 tsp

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Parboiled Rice – 1 cup

Salt to taste

Tamarind – a big lemon size

METHOD

1.Soak tamarind in 2 cups of hot water. Allow it to soak for 15 to 20 mins. Squeeze it and extract the pulp. Discard the seeds and skin. Also, wash the rice well in water and soak it in sufficient amount of water for 30 minutes.

2.Heat oil in a pot. Add mustard seeds. Let them crackle then add chana dal, urad dal and peanuts. Fry them in oil for few minutes until they get light golden in low to medium flame. Place the flame in low and add green chillies, dried red chillies, curry leaves, asafoetida and turmeric powder.

3.Drain the water from the soaked rice completely and add it into the pot. Saute the rice in the oil for 2 minutes. Add the tamarind extract and mix well. Add salt as per taste. The water should be a bit salty.so that when the rice gets cooked the salt will be correct. Place the flame in medium and allow the water to boil.when the water starts to boil nicely and rice begins to appear on the top. Cover the pot with a lid and cook in low flame for 10 minutes. After that switch off the flame.

Puli sadam is ready.

Serve with potato fry, cauliflower fry, yam fry, coriander thogayal or ellu thogayal.
