Potato Masiyal – Spicy Mashed Potato curry -Urulai Kizhangu Masiyal

Potato masiyal – My mom usually makes this as a side dish for Rice along with Vathal Kuzhambu. I love the combo very much. You can use also use this as a side dish for chapati or poori. Today I prepared this masiyal along with Rice, manathakkali vathal kuzhambu, beans poriyal and Appalam. This is a very good South Indian combo that you can try for lunch. You can also pair it with Rice and Rasam,Sambar or dal.

This recipe is so simple and can be prepared so easily. You can also this potato masiyal for making a sandwich and also as a stuffing for masala dosa.

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

Potato – 2

Oil – 1.5 tbsp

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Urad dal – 1 tsp

Onion – 1 (Big size,thinly sliced)

Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp

Red chilli powder – 1.5 tsp or as per taste

Asafoetida – 1/8 tsp

Salt to taste

Tomato – 1 (small size,chopped)]

Curry leaves – a few

METHOD

1.Wash the potatoes and make a cross on the skin of the potato, this will help to peel the skin of the potato easily. Pressure cook for 3 whistles or until the potato gets cooked and soft. Then open the lid after the pressure is released. Remove the skin of the potato and mash them nicely without any lumps.

2. Heat oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds.Let it splutter,then add urad dal.Let it turn golden.Then add sliced onions.Saute it lightly.Place flame in low flame,Add turmeric powder,red chilli powder,asafoetida,curry leavesand chopped tomatoes. Cook until the tomatoes get mushy.Add salt as per taste.Add the mashed potatoes and mix well. Allow it to cook in low flame for 2 more minutes.Then switch off the flame.

Serve with Rice,chapati or Poori.
