Yam Thoran – chena thoran

Yam thoran – a stir-fry with yam and coconut as main ingredients. It’s is a excellent side dish to have with Rice.

Serves : 4

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

Coconut Oil – 1.5 tbsp

Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

Urad dal – 1 tsp

Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

Yam – 3 cups( chopped)

Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp

Kashmiri chilli powder – 1 tsp

Salt to taste

For Grinding

Grated coconut – 1 cup

shallots – 10

Garlic – 8 pods

Green chillies – 3

Dried red chillies – 3

METHOD

1.Peel the skin and chop yam into small cubes. Wash them well and drain the water completely. Add the chopped yam, turmeric powder and little salt into a pot and place it on the flame. Allow the yam to cook. Switch off the flame when the yam is cooked and drain the water completely.

2.Grind grated coconut, shallots, garlic, green chillies, dried red chillies into a coarse paste.

3. Heat oil in a pan. When it’s hot add mustard seeds, urad dal and cumin seeds. Add the ground paste, saute it until the raw smell leaves. Add Kashmiri red chilli powder and mix well. Saute for a minute, then add the cooked yam and mix well with the masala. Check for salt and add salt as required. Drizzle some oil and allow it to cook in low flame for 5 minutes. Finally, add curry leaves and switch off the flame.

Yam thoran is ready.

Serve as a side dish with Rice and Sambar , dal, puli kuzhambu, vatha kuzhambu or rasam.
